Debbie Near, a native of southern Ontario, has been painting for over 20 years. She has a BA in Fine Arts from WLU and after along career in engineering, she has recently retired to Port Dover.
From her home studioshe applies her formal and informal training to her compositions. Her artist’s eye isattracted to bold colour, contrasts in light, rhythmic patterns, textures or the interplay ofshapes. Her colour palette is influenced by the works of Canadians such as Thomson, Carson, Harris and Carr. Sky, water and trees are recurring elements in her paintings.She works in both oils and acrylics and in recent years has been incorporating the art of
sumi-e, an ancient form of Japanese painting with ink, into her practice.
She has been active with a number of artist groups, including a term on the board of the Guelph Creative Arts Association, and is pleased to be a recent participant with Capital Arts Market. Debbie has gained recognition province-wide for her work at many juried artshows.
